Local High School First to Install New Playing Surface

Mariemont High School's Kusel Stadium recently replaced its grass field with a new product "home grown" by The Motz Group, an international sports turf company headquartered in Newtown, Ohio.

The new 24/7® synthetic turf is a durable, affordable alternative to natural grass. It is composed of a soft, long-pile carpet placed over a porous rubber pad and filled with granulated rubber. It’s ideal for high-traffic, multi-use sites and widely considered to be a far safer, more user-friendly surface than traditional synthetic fields, according to Joe Motz, president of The Motz Group.

“It really makes sense, especially for a school our size,” said Tom Crosby, Mariemont football coach and assistant principal. “It’s difficult to grow and manage natural turf when you have 100 contests a year.”

Crosby expects the surface to be popular in the high-school market. “You can use the field for more than game days. We can hold our phys ed classes there, and the band and cheerleaders can practice every day.”

Mark Heinlein, senior vice president of The Motz Group, agrees. “Few high schools or small colleges have the luxury of single-sport venues used only for competition. Our 24/7 system not only eliminates the need to restrict field usage; it provides the owner with a surface that is open and playable year-round,” he said.

As a school administrator, Crosby was also looking for cost savings. “With the new field, we save a considerable amount of money on maintenance. Sprinkling, lining, grass-cutting, fertilizing, seeding, aerating - we don’t have to worry about any of that.”

Crosby said the new field has proven to be a safe, consistent playing surface. “It’s actually softer than natural grass because of the pad underneath it,” he said. “It gives kids in soccer and football a very true bounce, unlike old-style synthetics. It’s not like bouncing on a parking lot.”

The 24/7 product performs under all weather conditions. “We don’t have to worry about mud anymore,” said Crosby.

The Motz Group, recognized internationally for the design and construction of natural turf athletic fields, recently introduced the synthetic alternative into its product line.
