The PAT® system offers precise moisture management for natural grass playing fields. This automated system is designed and engineered to meet a singular objective: consistent, superior performance in any climate. The PAT system provides ideal turf growing conditions promoting dense, resilient, deeply rooted turf.

The system involves an intricate network of pipes covered by rootzone sand and connected to a powerful vacuum system. Via computer, field managers can track how much water is on the field, adding or removing as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture levels.

PAT is the answer under extreme conditions: when large amounts of water must be removed or when conservation is necessary because little water is available. For more than 25 years, PAT’s reputation has been rigorously tested in the world’s most respected collegiate and professional stadiums.

PAT® Advantages

  • Promotes dense, resilient and deeply rooted turf by optimizing soil moisture percentage
  • Provides sure-footed play under the wettest conditions
  • Offers the ability to conserve, capture and recycle water
  • Subsurface irrigation improves watering efficiency
  • Vacuum function increases drainage and discharge rates

PAT® Prescription Athletic Turf® System

1. Natural Turf Playing SurfacePAT Prescription Athletic Turf
The perfectly flat, laser-leveled playing surface is ideal for sporting and non-athletic events.

2. Rootzone
Root strength, canopy density and rapid recuperation—vital signs of rugged durability—are maximized with precisely blended/ graded rootzone sand.

3. Moisture Control Geomembrane
The heat-welded, water-tight polyethylene barrier allows precise control of the rootzone moisture level.

4. Drainage and Subirrigation
Gravity or vacuum-enhanced drainage removes water from the rootzone. It can be returned through sub-irrigation and/or water recycling.

5. System Controls
The barrier water level, calculated to produce the targeted air/water ratio in the rootzone, is continually monitored by sophisticated gauges. The system’s computer analyzes data and automatically initiates moisture management functions. The system can also be operated manually by the field manager. Specialized software permits operation of an overhead irrigation system directly through the PAT control panel. Remote monitoring and troubleshooting are possible with an ethernet and connection customized software.

A PAT® system functions in four different modes

Subirrigation – By closing off drainage valves and supplying water back through the matrix, the field can be uniformly irrigated from the base up as water moves through the rootzone by capillary action.

Conservation – When the rootzone reaches optimum moisture levels, the system can hold those levels for an extended period of time, reducing the amount of overhead irrigation needed. When drainage is activated, the system removes only the water in excess of optimum levels. This is particularly valuable in arid, water-restricted areas.

Gravity Drainage – Under normal operating conditions, excess water is removed from the field by gravity flow. The rate of field drying is governed by how fast gravity can pull water through the sand profile and into the drainage matrix.

Vacuum Drainage – When water falls on the field faster than gravity can remove it the system activates vacuum drainage and water is forcibly removed at a rate up to three times the natural force of gravity.

The Motz Group is also able to add system features on a site-specific basis. Water recycling can be achieved by capturing and reusing effluent water via storage tanks or retention ponds and then reapplying it through the overhead irrigation system. Various field heating and aeration systems can also be installed in conjunction with the PAT system.

The Triple Play® brand is the newest addition to The Motz Group’s lineup of quality synthetic turf systems. Conceived specifically for baseball, Triple Play’s durable, all-weather surface means less rainouts, more games throughout the year and greatly reduced maintenance costs. The system is available in two styles tailored to meet your budget and performance requirements.

Triple Play is our value engineered product and has widespread appeal across all levels of baseball. It’s manufactured using the highest quality, wear resistant pile fiber available and infilled with crumb rubber and sand. It’s designed for extended play and minimal maintenance. Like every good utility player, you can rely on Triple Play for a solid showing day in and day out.

Triple Play HP is our high performance model and includes a premium, dual-fiber turf, Envirofill® acrylic coated sand infill and a shock-absorbing underpad. The system delivers MVP performance in the areas that are key to field playability: natural, consistent ball bounce, smooth and straight ball roll and a fast, firm and sure-footed surface. Triple Play HP delivers the superior field characteristics expected by those competing at the highest levels of the game.

“I’d never been on a synthetic field that plays anywhere close to grass, until I was on Triple Play. Ground balls run true and hops are consistent and predictable. It’s the perfect baseball surface.”
- Chris Speier, All-Star 3rd baseman and current Cincinnati Reds’ infield and bench coach.

From little league to the pros and park district to training academy, Triple Play is the ultimate solution for year-round field access and unrivaled playability.

TS-II® is a patented combination of natural grass growing in a unique stabilizing mat. The combination produces a system that delivers the manageability, playability and flexibility demanded by today’s world-class venues.

TSII® Advantages

  • 100% Natural grass playing surface meets all governing body regulations
  • Dramatically increased wear tolerance compared to conventional grass
  • Horizontal stability, even on pure sand rootzones
  • Decreased devoting, shearing and displacement damage
  • Meets the aesthetic and athletic demands of today’s sport field market
  • Provides the flexibility to rapidly replace logos and change out worn areas
  • Immediate playability upon installation or rotation

TSII® Synthetically Stabilized Turf®

PAT Prescription Athletic Turf1. Full natural grass surface
Grass leaf blades grow above the tops of the synthetic tufts, creating a fully natural grass surface. If the grass canopy is thinned, the underlying synthetic matrix continues to provide a consistent, sure-footed playing surface.

2. Synthetic turf matrix
The grass roots become entwined in the synthetic matrix and grow unimpeded through the backing and into the rootzone material below.

3. Growing medium infill
The infill layer is selected to be compatible with the sites growing medium to minimize agronomic differences between the turf and underlying rootzone profile.

4. Dual-component backing
The dual-component backing of biodegradable fabric and tough plastic mesh acts as the anchor for the components above it and provides additional horizontal load-bearing capacity.

The plant’s vegetative parts — roots, crowns, rhizomes, stolons, tillers — grow protected within the stabilized zone, shielded from wear damage. This extends the fields playability and accelerates recovery following use. Management strategies include common practices like verti-cutting, aerating and topdressing.

Synthetic turf fields are not maintenance free. Adopting the proper maintenance program will keep your field looking better and performing more consistently and will result in a healthier, safer playing surface.

The Motz Group designs fields. We build fields. We maintain fields. We know fields inside and out. Our SMP program is a comprehensive four-step approach to field maintenance that keeps our customers delighted with their field’s appearance, function and safety. Maximum benefit is attained when the program is implemented twice-yearly.

1. Field Audit

The SMP process begins with a thorough analysis of your turf conducted by a certified Motz technician, preferably accompanied on site by the facility’s maintenance chief. Following the inspection, a detailed written audit is delivered that identifies issues like damaged or discolored turf, loose seams, fiber degradation and infill level/uniformity. Recommended remedial actions are clearly documented.

2. Repair & Preparation

Basic repairs identified in the audit, including mending torn or loose seams and inlays are completed. The nature and frequency of these repairs often hint at incorrect grooming techniques or maintenance deficiencies, so we take the opportunity to consult side-by-side with your maintenance personnel, reviewing maintenance procedures, addressing concerns and exchanging ideas.

3. Revitalization
The Motz Group’s “Big Foot,” is a unique, specially designed, multi-functional grooming machine that is key to the renewal process. Big Foot revitalization includes a thorough four-step mechanical process:

Infill Decompacting – the machine penetrates the playing surface and with heavy vibration loosens and levels the infill, decreasing compaction (and Gmax levels) and increasing surface drainage performance.

Rotary Brushing/Vacuuming – rotary brushing loosens dirt and dust particles attached to the fiber and infill. Loose fibers and infill are lifted by vacuum and passed through a filtration system that captures items such as athletic equipment debris, leaves, dust, lint, human hair and dander.

Magnetic Sweeping – high powered magnets remove potentially dangerous ferrous metal fragments, such as helmet snaps, cleat tips and bobby pins that are lodged in the turf.

Grooming – specially designed brushes are pulled across the surface, lifting the fibers into a more upright orientation. The process helps maximize fiber lifespan and enhances field color vibrancy and overall field appearance.

4. Disinfection

The final step is a contact disinfectant spray treatment that tackles pathogens present on the field surface. Bacteria, including MRSA, mold, mildew, algae and fungi are all significantly reduced with this broad-spectrum biocidal application. A disinfectant spray program may reduce team injuries and potential future liabilities.

4. Drainage matrix – Field drainage is site-designed for optimal efficiency and performance. Our engineers and job superintendents have the expertise to deal with the wide array of geographic and regulatory issues that can impact your project, keeping you within budget and on schedule.

Synthetic turf fields have a finite lifespan, somewhere between eight and 12 years, depending on a variety of issues, including initial quality, level of use and climatic exposure. As the field replacement window opens owners need to critically weigh their options based on budget and user group demands. Concerns about how the new field will impact the environment are becoming an ever more important consideration.

The Motz Group has the in-house capability to assist you in the decision making process. Because we have been designing and building fields for more than 30 years, we have the technical competence – backed up by practical experience – to help you thoroughly evaluate your field replacement options. Here are some of the basic questions that will help you get the ball rolling:

Project Management
Who will provide leadership on the project?
Will an architect or engineer be needed or will the project be design/build?
Will it be a public bid, and RFP or a negotiated contract?

Budget
What is the overall budget?
What is the cost to dispose of the existing field?
What is the estimated annual cost for maintenance?
Over how many years will the cost be amortized?

Site Engineering
Does the base work, including the drainage system, need to be replaced?
Are there any storm water regulations that affect how the new field is engineered?
Are the field’s dimensions, orientation or slopes to be altered?
Is there other work to be undertaken, such as track surfacing, new bleachers, lighting, etc?

Turf
Who are the primary user groups?
How many hours will the turf be used on average per week?
Should a shock attenuation pad be included?
What fiber is best for the intended usage?
What field markings and graphics should be included and what are the color choices?
What kind of infill is to be used?

With The Motz Group on your team at project inception, you can be assured the process will be smooth and professional. We deliver every day on our mantra of Building Fields and Building Trust™.

Beautiful, manicured and carefree. Words never spoken in the same sentence when talking about your grass lawn. Keeping your yard in top shape is expensive and time consuming; some may even say environmentally insensitive, with all the water, pesticides and fuel-powered equipment required. Throw in the climatic curveballs that Mother Nature dishes up throughout the seasons and the quest for perfection (or even ordinary) is anything but relaxing.

Baseball: the Great American Pastime. Many are the recollections of hot summer days spent on scorched-out grass outfields and dust bowl infields, or quagmires too muddy to play on. Thanks to The Motz Group’s revolutionary new synthetic turf baseball system, Triple Play™, tomorrow’s memories will be of perfect hops and endless games.

Triple Play™ delivers the ideal playing surface: a dense, flat “grass” surface with smooth transitions at the material interfaces. And because Triple Play™ uses Envirofill® acrylic coated sand instead of rubber for infill, ball bounce and ball roll are always consistent and predictable. The underlying shock pad contributes the perfect combination of player comfort and safety.

Put Motz on your team and then give your maintenance crew the summer off. Triple Play™ is an all-weather system that’s ready for play every single time your team is.

When The Motz Group takes the field, you can expect a perfect playing surface for your team. Our philosophy begins with a solid foundation and is followed by layers of experience, dedication with undisputed character that creates the perfect environment for success.

Building Fields and Building Trust™ is the seed that cultivates throughout our day-to-day philosophy. This philosophy is threaded through our entire team – as we construct your field, it becomes deeply rooted.
